This is a scientific finding. A glass, just one glass, of red wine is good for diabetics anf heart patients. Reduces their blood sugar, and LDL levels, and raises their HDL levels.
As a cardiologist, how would you advise your patients?

AFP-Relaxnews  :.

""Between too much and not enough, the right amount for type 2 diabetics is one glass of red wine, just one. — Reuters picNEGEV, Oct 14 — One glass of red wine at dinner was found to help sufferers of type 2 diabetes sleep better, improve their metabolism and increase levels of “good cholesterol” to protect against cardiovascular disease, according to an international study.
Between too much and not enough, the right amount is one glass of red wine, just one, if possible taken at dinner. That is the conclusion of an international study published in the 13 October edition of the journal Annals of Internal Medicine.
The researchers, most of who were from the Ben Gurion University of the Negev in Israel, studied type 2 diabetes patients controlled by drugs. The researchers said that these patients were chosen because they are more likely to develop cardiovascular disease, have a lower level of “good” cholesterol and are also less inclined to drink a lot because of their condition.
Their aim, via this study, was to examine the impact, in safety and efficacy terms, of moderate intake of wine on health on this group of patients.
The team chose 224 people with type 2 diabetes who drank moderate levels of alcohol. During their evening meal, the volunteers had to drink the equivalent of 5 ounces (142 ml) of one of the following drinks: mineral water, dry white wine or dry red wine.
With a dietician’s guidance, the participants also followed a Mediterranean diet without calorific restriction for a two-year period.
Each participant had to fill in a questionnaire and undertook blood tests to identify various biological markers including glucose, lipids and markers associated with various liver functions.
Their findings indicate that the group of participants who chose to drink red wine had a greater amount of “good” cholesterol (HDL cholesterol), as well as better cholesterol ratio compared to the participants who drank water.
The researchers also noted that with the volunteers who drank wine, there was a significant reduction in the number of components of the metabolic syndrome (the presence of a combination of signs which increase the risk of acquiring diabetes, cardiac conditions and strokes, editor’s note).
The researchers found that drinking red or white wine was also associated with improved sleep.
The researchers concluded that this long term study suggests that combining a healthy diet with moderate wine intake, especially red wine, helps to lower cardio-metabolic risks. "" — AFP-Relaxnews

tq dato,

I know you are being 'naughty' here, but I will answer you.

As what all good muslim doctors  would do.......I will look at the red wine advisory from a  more global perspective. This red wine study is certainly very good for the world red wine industry. It is great for them but this is not new This news is already 40 years old!. It keep surfacing as if it is new information. That is the nature of industries. The benefit conferred to risk reduction and protection is very minimal compared to the classical advice of :

DONT SMOKE,
Keep your weight to your precollege days weigh IDEAL
EXERCISE EXERCISE AND EXERCISE AND exercise.
Look after your cholestrol etc etc .
Control of hypertension if you have one
And above all , avoid and prevent the onset of diabetes

I think it act via anti oxidant and another pathway, but the benefit is very minimal compared to dieting, low cholesterol. exercise , control of hypertension and diabetes, no smoking et c etcetc.

In fact if one were to make an objective study on the effect of life of piety [ ie; zikrullah, solat etc etc ], on the lifespan of people already proven to have heart problem, the prolongation to life would be more significant.

But piety is not an easily quantifiable 'variable' and there is no 'industry driven' motivation to spend millions on such study.

But having said that, I always advice my non muslim patients who take alcohol to change their beer drinking habit to just a touch of 'red wine'.
For  Muslims, my accent is on walking that extra kilometre to their nearest surau for their isha and subuh prayer and 'NO CORNER BARING'.

A footnote and disclaimer though need to be inserted here.

Despite what we cardiologists do, that sword of Damocle is always on the head for guys already proven to have coronary disease.
Some degree of uncertainty is always there, therefore when you ask me about the miniscule effect of red wine, I consider it quite peripheral...
              Consider this hypothetical scenario :

One fine morning , when you go to your school for an important board meeting,  your chairman of the board fired you summarily for no apparent reason. That same  morning CIMB Damansara phoned in to say they are foreclosing your bungalows in TTDI, Damansara Height and your London  and San marino apartments, because your massive business loan has been withdrawned , due to your apparently lack of show of public support to 'Ringgit Malaysia' in her time of need. Coming home your dear wife of 50 over years asked for an instant divorce. My God ! ..and she has always been very loving. She wants to go on in life and lives on with your business partner! Your must have not been performing, one can presume!

Your BP suddenly shot up to 240/140 . That paper-thin vessel , the circle of Willis, that all important roundabout up in the center of your brain remained intact and does not burst. Lucky you!  But this sudden burst of high pressure was too much for your coronary tree. The undiagnosed , subclinical, unimportant, 20 % narrowing  plaque in your Left Main Stem coronary artery ruptured and become suddenly 100 % block. You had it even before you can say,'abradacabra...' Not even enough time to say the shahadah.
The news in NST the next day emblazoned on page 2:
'Former DG Tourism, vibrant entreprenuer, educator par    excellence of Cempaka, found dead on kitchen table at his palatial Damansara Height home...foul play excluded'

A life of piety, a zikr  and solat laden life.
This is not easily quantifiable by any study.
But I put it to you that it is far better than your  glass
of red wine daily! It can help 'modulate' and 'cushion out'
all the rough edges and uncertainties related to living this
transient and superficial life of ours on this earth.

It is better a 1000 times than your RED WINE!

Life from my perspective is pretty fragile.
It is human to plan, but GOD directs!

I agree with what you say doc, to which l add the benefits of clean, unpolluted air. A study was done on a small, remote village on the Tibetan side of the Himalayan range. A statistically significant percentage of the Buddhist village elders there live actively to well over 100 years, many over 110!
They were lean and wiry, and lived on a simple diet of yogourt, unleavened bread, tofu, vegetables, nuts, tea, and occasional meat. No sugar. Basic in calories quantum. But they a do a lot of walking and climbing in the open CLEAN AIR. The air quality was very good.
The researchers monitored their bloods and found the LDL and triglycerides low, HDL high, liver and kidney functions good.
The scientists attribibuted the longivity mainly to the walks in the great open spaces, very clean air, and a simple, low calorie diet, and absence of sugar.
I am sure you would have come across this study.

yes i do dato.

i wrote a  3-article series on ' longevity 101 ' in  my 'mutiara dan zamrud' blog [ pearls & gem ] some 7 years back.
you are welcomed to read it.

we have to be, lean, hungry and moving, and lead spiritually simple life.
easier said than done now of course in our highly geared , high level-consumerist, the more the better, economy, that is expounded everywhere today.
in the 3rd article, 'longevity and the way of rasullallah', i posed the view that at 1450 years ago rasullallah's 6 decades and three was probably equivalent to a hundred now.

he had nine wives and never failed to visit all of them in the course of a day's work; ran the affairs of  the  state and fight many  wars in the name of defence of a fledgling nation state, surrounded in the north by a belligerent super-power, the roman empire, to the west,  the  indomitable persians, in the south,  the musrikuns of mekkah and worse off, peripherally on the edge of madinah by the jews of najran and internally within madinah, the al munafikuns.; sell things in the market place for his own and family sustanence right after subuh prayer up to zohor; eat little and stopped before reaching satiety; slept immediately after isha and and do qiam around 2 or 3 in the wee hours of the morning and had a light nap after zohor, etc and etc  and etc.

and no red wine of course!
red wine is a peripheral issue.
the porcine protein [ pork ] has the lowest antigenicity to human protein and in medicine, can be beneficial.
but halal is halal. haram is haram.
in 10 years if they come up with pork that live in lab and feed on corn, and rid of dangerous parasite, and some studies show it is excellent for universal consumption, you may pose to me another questionaire.....

haram is still haramdato, i would write.
halal is halal.
God in HIS infinite wisdom,KNOWS all and HE is just testing our faith.

HE throw in 'some spanners in the engine' and see whether we 'blink or not'
same with Riba , futures trading, etc, etc etc and etc.

dato,

very sad, if that is indeed their only reason for existence!

i guess they have  selective myopia to start with and a very narrow outlook to politics.
lord reid has been dead for almost more than half a century and who are these g25 anyway, 'muslim kah depa' or are there melayu with too much cheese for their own good!?
typical senior govt servitude to not come into confrontation with those who govern and determine the quantum of one's pension

just yesterday, a senior retired judge , somehow related to me via marriage , also 3 years my senior at mckk, proudly parade in the malay mail , was so proud that he has been invited to join the g25. I am not going to be personal but if you ask me, i would not join g25 even if people promise me 20 million rm!!! not even 50 million rm or 100. come think about it, not even seven mountains of gold!

you can ask me why? i will answer you.

if i am a retired judge ,or a retired ambassador just back from my champange filled days in europe or america, or a retired dg of some important ministries, and
even if i am   relatively ignorant of the meaning and ramifications of HIS divine letters, i would just keep my mouth shut  and stay in the sideline. it is better that way.

being in g25 is akin to drawing a definitive line in the sand......saying NO to Allah's  divine advisories is no small matter. i would rather keep it in my chest, so that in yaumiddin, i would not be held accountable. let the top amenu politicians do it. leave it to them. they are, at least from their recent behaviour, quite Godless. at least there is no inkling of an iota of  fear of god in their most recent behaviour. even the godless japanese would have done a harakiri of sort by now, given the gravity of their missdeeds.

i do not mind drawing sword with ntr. the worst case scenario is that i would get to see dr m  and his lawyer brian chung as my neighbours.
but if you draw lines in the sand against  Allah, you are trading your posterity. and that is for eternity

if ex ambassadors, and ex judges  and ex dg's know their quran a wee bit more, they will be more careful. that is my 'not so humble opinion', if you may.

I think you refer to the retired Appeals Court judge .
I do not know him personally but, from his work on the Bench, think he is an honourable man. I studied Law at Middle Temple, and l think he is a judge who understands Jurisprudence well. Our Constitution is Secular in content, meaning there is a SEPARATION between individual belief and the State powers.
As a judge he took an oath to uphold the law in context of the Constitution, just like you took the Hyppocratic oath when you started to practice Medicine. In our system, The Agong, Sultans, Parliament, the Cabinet, and the Judiciary, are all PART of the Constitution, never above it. Justice Hishamuddin was true to his oath. That was why he joined the G 25 when he retired.
I think he has no sympathy with theocracy, having seen and deeply understands the modern examples of blood-lust ISIS and KSA, and many others in the OIC. Our Constitution protects us from such dangers.
Hence my view diverges from yours.

dato,

personalities aside, g25 is a great letdown. does not matter it is not within the ambit of their term of reference, as you say earlier.
nothing personal.
as a group they are very quiet , almost total deafening silence on the issue of ntr's gross intransigence, morally and legally.
on islam they make too much noise against it

my pakmat nyadap of pasir puteh , the proverbial uncouth , uneducated chap from kelantan, would exclaim:
guano demo ning. pasa islae gege machae nok pecoh bumi.
pasa najib , tok bunying lasong. senyap macae orghe bisu.

if pak mat is from kuala ketil he would ask:
'depa ni, sekolah kat pondok mana?'

again i would reiterate i would not join g25, even if you promise me the world
i do not want to exchange my posterity even if you can give me seven mountains of gold!

allah put it more succintly, in al baqarah i think, i have forgotten the exact ayat:
" ...these clowns sell my ayats for a few ringgit....", and i do not have to add what HE promised these people.

and talking about the ringgit ringgit lately, it has gone up to 4.10 sen to the dollar.
malaysians can sigh some relief.
but my friends in bank negara, they are having heartburn seeing our reserve diminishing by the days to support even 4.10

when is najib going to end his madness and call it a day ?
not that it is going to solve our problem rightaway because we have very very senior people in the present cabinet who have been known to accept outright bribes of even 500k  rm cash in school bag in his office several years back!!!!
i know this for a fact.
i know who gave it and to whom, but as a gentleman i will keep it a secret.

this is the level of governance that we have collectively sunk to.

not only we do not have the institutions.
we do not even have the people.
so, dato, are we at all surprised to hear from the ag's office today that oneamgedebe does need to answer anything!!!!!!!!
the  chap who broke the not so unexpected news was, i recall in his younger days, just  a bag carrier during the  celebrated mona fandi trial.
'cari makan punya pasal' , he remains a bag carrier.
but he deserve an instant tansriship by our present malaysian standard.

and all these clowns in the present cabinet can say is that the royal council is not quite serious in their deliberation..
oh common, hishamuddin tun hussien, dont be stupid...
we all know what the sultans are alluding to.

ntr , PLEASE RESIGN Sir!
so that justice can be done or seen to be done.
if you have to go to prison, go to prison please.
at least by your example , malaysia can move on to greater height.
that would be your greatest contribution.

...of ambassador and G25 class : tafseerkoran.blogspot.com.

Friends, Dato' and Tansri,

I started this 'tafseer journey' some 3 years back in December 2012, with just a handful of following weekly.
Now it is twice weekly and benefited some 1000 friends, whom some i have met and majority, i have not met.

A close friend of mine asked last week as to why i take the trouble to go thru tafseer and tafseer in the net for hours a day, listening to them, review and select;
all done in between a very busy hospital practice; sent to people whom you do not know; to be told oftentimes that :
' No thanks doc, please stop sending these sh.. to me , I never read them! I am secular and I am proud I will die secular!'.
They are amongst the elites, a couple of ex ambasssadors and  a few from the g25 class!

I told my friend that , 'this is why I am precisely still doing this! '
It is a pleasure having 100 over contemporary 'minor mufasirin' [ if I can call them so ] working for you FOC and 100 over world class qari to choose from, also FOC, at the click of a finger! Thanks to Bill Gates!
It is a pleasure listening thru video lectures  of shaykhs  and ustazs of the likes of Hamza Yusuf, Ninowy , al-Yacoubi, Harun Din, Dr Ismail Lutfi  and the late Tok Guru Nik Aziz, etc and etc, to fill the 'spaces' in between the elucidation of the Divine Letters.

Noah alaihusalam who sweated over 950 years  of daawa had only 80 people on his ark by the time of the Great Flood.
And he had no assistants, no qari and  contemporary 'mufassirins' to help him, and no Bill Gates and Microsoft either!
My effort is so very very very miniscule compared to Noah alaihisalam's.
Mashallah! it is my great pleasure to be just the humble postman, insyaallah.

Rasullallah is not only for the Muslims.
His message is for all, the non Muslims, the atheists, agnositcs, the trees, the animals, the seas and the mountains.
He is after-all the 'Rahmatul Alamin' !

We move on to ayat 18 to ayat 25, at the end of it is about Noah alaihisalam

Case History : Cest' Dieu Qui Direct

Remember Encik K, the 50+  year old , ex-Petronas, Oil and Gas man ,I implanted a 'plastic' bioabsorbable coronary scaffold some two years back. He is diabetic, with 30 kg excess weight then and suboptimally controlled diabetic.

He went on to reduce the 'volume' of his food intake, follow optimal medication regime and his hbaic blood test on subsequent follow was great!

But two years down the 'lane' he was diagnosed to have an advance nasopharygeal carcinoma  with significant spread [ NPC, 'cancer of the throat ] and underwent both radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Subsequent to this, unfortunately, I later was told by his oncologist, he developed  the dreaded 'neutropenia' [ very low white cell count ] which predisposes him to viruses and bacterial infection.

Just two weeks ago I bumped into his son along the hospital corridor, " Doc, my dad is in ICU, in coma. The doctors say he has epilepsy and has to be intubated........"

Just now I bumped into his wife and retinue along the corridor, " How is Encik K...? "
" Not good Doc... he is still in coma. The neurologist says he has viral encephalitis....".
Sounds not good at all.
Two weeks and still in coma.

When Will NTR Resign......[ or what will david cameroon do if he is in the same position ? ]

friends, dato' and tansri,

i think it is a forgone conclusion.
it is no longer 'will ntr resign?'.
it is when will he resign. some near the inner circle says between the next few weeks to a month.
there will be a lot of horse trading and cow trading going on.
for those of you guys who owns islands or big pieces of property overseas or local, you guys could do the nation a service to expedite his resignation.
this long wait is affecting the economy, not that we have much economy left.
anywhere in the maldive will do for this beleuguered  couple. diego garcia where mh370 is currently housed also ok
worse case scenario, pulau tok gajah near semerak.

Dr Haji Nik Ishak,

From the info I got, the issue is more of the cash flow rather than the issue of liabilities exceeding assets. The assets should be sufficient to cover the liabilities. While there are unanswered questions, the investigation by PAC and AG should provide some answers to it.

So does the Government still has the money? Yes. But if 1MDB is unable to meet its debt service obligation, there will be opportunity cost to the people if the Government has to come to rescue 1MDB. Some expenditure readjustment will have to be made. If and only if...

Nikhowk,

1.  IMDB has finally come up with some accounting of its liabilities and how the proceeds from the creation of these liabilities have been applied/invested. Let's just assume everything is hunky-dory as CEO Arun Kandasamy would have you believed. The question remains: if it is so straight forward, why do they have to take months to release the simple facts and burden the country with a political crisis? Perhaps 1MDB believed it is above accountability, in which case it did have a governance, ethics and attitude problem.  Vested with a custodianship and trusteeship. role ( as all GLCs are), the obligation is neither to throw stones nor to undress in the dark, but to dress and undress with all the lights on in your Rakyat-owned glass house.

2.  Let us now re-look at 1MDB's numbers. The 42 billion borrowings, which presumably included bonds, syndicated loans and advances from friends whether that be KWAP, Tabung Haji or Ananda Krishnan, have been applied for investments, costs and interest paynents. What it has airbrushed is the Jho Low hijack of its funds to finance the UBG adventure which has been painstakingly detailed by The Edge, The Sarawak Report and TDM. Not grabbing the bull by the horns (as DPM puts it) and finally prove it is mere bullshit is to prolong the controversy. Selective exposure may be great in a night club, but on matters as critical as these accusations, it has no place in corporate life.

3. But the detailing of its liabilities and proceeds applications hardly tells the full story. It is not even as good as footballer George Best's accounting for his lost millions by saying that he spent some on booze, some on birds and the rest he merely blew away. What we need to know as citizens and tax-payers are the following:

a. whether a fair price was paid for each individual investment;
b. how each individual investment has performed;
c. what portion of that investment performance is due to wise management and policy decision making;
d. what portion is due to acquisition of grossly under-priced government assets;
e. what portion is due to government intervention designed to shore up values of dubious acquisition pricing ;
f. what of these expenditures have no real carrying values ( the equivalent of any of George Best's three Bs of fund applications).

4. It is only when the above questions are answered, can we analyse and arrive at the truth of the 1MDB adventure. At that point we can decide whether it was a vision of great wisdom but badly executed, stupid but innocent, stupid and dishonest or a grand larceny by design and by execution.

4. I shall not hazard to impose my suspicions on your readers, Nikhowk, because someone here such as Nik Azman, may be able to give perfectly good innocent answers to the niggling questions posed. But until the questions are explained, I don't believe we can afford to be sanguine.

My two sens worth. Salam, Azmi.

from the simple raayat's perspective, that is of interest
it would be nice to for malaysia to send its first  pm to jail for once, at least we are telling the world that we are dead serious to change.
otherwse we are not much different from our neighbour, the myammaris:
when asked in cnn, who the rohinggas, one senior fellow replied," we do not know where they come from! "

Nikhowk, As always in the imperfect world of man-made regulations or even God-made laws but administered by men, the answer is it all depends.

On the basis of the laws as written, specifically the Penal Code ( the secular Hudud if you like) and various legislations enacted by Parliament, thieving and activities of similar nature is an offence carrying custodial sentence. (But I am no lawyer, so please proceed to read my views here with caution).  So is money laundering, conspiracy to cheat, abuse of powers and quite a few other choice possibilities that an honest and conscientious prosecutor can choose to pursue in relation to the 1MDB scandal.

The global perspective is a spectrum that runs from Britain and Scandinavia to Myanmar, Zimbabwe and the Tribal hinterland of Pakistan. If something like this were to happen in Britain, you can be certain that within days of the scandal breaking out and without waiting for the public to file a report at some remote police station, a full investigation by the Serious Fraud Office would have been launched. The SFO findings would be submitted to the Crown Prosecution Service and charges would be made against those implicated in the findings. By this time, any politician remotely involved would have already resigned from both their positions in the organisation and in government.

Would David Cameron be charged under similar circumstances? British politicians have learned a long time ago not to sit on the Boards of GLCs or of NGOs other than the most benign ones like the Charitable Home for Handicapped Cats. You have to assume, if there was a similar British IMDB situation, DC and everybody associated in that chain of command would be prosecuted (in a real  rather than the Razak Baginda way). And if found guilty, yes DC would have to eat Her Majesty's prison rations.

The dissimilarities between Britain and Malaysia are not about the laws, but the framework of governance. Some countries uphold the independence of their judiciary, police, civil service and such other institutions, making sure they are protected from political influences and control. Some countries have yet to evolve these values. Some others, having had some of these institutional framework in place, have allowed their dismantling because politicians in power have found them inconvenient.
